Nearly all patients hospitalized with Covid are still suffering from symptoms a year after being infected, according to a new study published Thursday in The Lancet.

Erasmus MC, Laurens, a Rijndam rehabilitation and care institution, conducted a study of 650 patients admitted to Rijnmond area hospitals with coronavirus between July 2020 and July 2021.

They found that 92% of patients complained of pain, post-exertional shortness of breath, severe fatigue, memory and concentration problems after one year.

“What is surprising is that there is virtually no improvement in complaints,” Erasmus MC pulmonologist Merrell Helemons, who led the study, told the NOS.

Three months after becoming ill, 97% of patients still have symptoms, and that rate drops to 92% after 12 months.

A previous study showed that 1 in 8 patients still suffered from long-lasting covid symptoms three months after infection. Despite the wide sample, Rheinmond’s study focused only on hospitalized patients.

Experts are unsure why some patients experience COVID-19 symptoms for so long, calling for more research.

Rehabilitation has been shown to improve symptoms in some patients, but there are few treatments for patients suffering from fatigue and cognitive problems.
