The plan to spend € 10 million annually to protect vulnerable businesses from organized crime was rejected as “peanuts” by Mayor Ahmed Abauareb of Rotterdam.
Justice Minister Dylan Yesirgos said the money will be used by criminals who want to set up drug laboratories on their lands, bribe-sensitive port officials, and other entrepreneurs who are forced to deal with the underworld. He said he would support the farmers approached by.
Abau Aleb, the main gateway to drug traffickers, said he welcomed the government’s efforts to prevent criminals from entering legitimate businesses, but the amount involved was too small to make a difference. I couldn’t.
“In Colombia alone, they invested € 215 billion to deal with this turmoil,” he said. “Euro 10 million is a great gesture, but it’s just a gesture.”
The mayor said more specific measures were needed, such as checking all containers passing through the port. “Otherwise, we have to accept that cocaine will deepen our ankles over the next few years.”
Yesilgöz admitted that the government could not match the resources of international drug trading, but argued that investment could make a difference. “We haven’t invested so much in the fight against drugs, but it’s still only a small part of what criminals make, so we need to spend our money wisely.”
According to the farmer organization ZLTO, one in five farmers was contacted by a criminal trying to store illegal goods in an empty hut or store.
Hendrick Hexema said he believes farmers are more likely to use secret services than to consult police. “The willingness to report crimes is low. They have not seen many police in rural areas to reduce.
