The rising star from West Belfast said he’s ready to “attack while the iron is hot” after appearing in Michael Flatley’s directorial debut, Blackbird.
Ali-Louise Kelly, 29, has spoken out about her “great friendship” with the legendary Irish dancer for the Irish premiere of his directional debut at Dublin’s Lighthouse Cinema.
Kelly made a name for herself as a talented vocalist, playing venues in Belfast’s busy hospitality scene before moving to London as a grammar school teacher.
Opportunity came when I was 21. She signed on as a singer for Flatley’s ‘Lord of the Dance’ theater production. After touring around the world for several years, she eventually settled in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, after a six-month stay in London’s West Her End.
Encouraged by Flatley, she proceeded to audition for the role of singer Madeline in the film, explaining how she won the role despite competing with trained actresses.
“All the girls were really well-trained professionals. I thought, ‘You know what? I’m going to this audition. I didn’t think I was going to get it, but at least it would be a good experience for me to go see what Craig is anyway.
“Then I got a call saying that I was going to fly to Barbados for five weeks.”
Kelly isn’t new to working with Flatley, but explained that this particular role required more than an impressive singing voice.
“We have a great friendship and to be honest, he took the chance to put me on that show because it was my first movie. I could easily get there.” “I could, but it wasn’t very good,” she said.
“He wants to give me great opportunities and the roles are very diverse. It really shows all the purpose of that character, not just singing.”
It was challenging at first, but Kelly says she soon learned to act “like a duck in the water.”
Originally filmed in 2017, Mary-Louise wasn’t sure if the film would get a wider cinematic release, but she’s been surprised by the recent feedback.

Following the premiere in Dublin, Kelly said “the atmosphere was great” and was overwhelmed with messages of support from family and friends at home.
“I think it’s been released and has my own vocals in it. Now is the time to strike while the iron is hot and get an agent.”
Kelly is now a Dubai-based singer, influencer and model with a rapidly growing social media presence on Instagram and TikTok.
“When I left for Dubai, I had about 6,000 followers…where your Instagram is basically your resume. I think it’s a good place to take a chance.”
Speaking of future plans, Kelly says she’s taking Dubai one day at a time as it’s a flexible base for international travel and work abroad. We want to secure it and are considering visiting Los Angeles for the New Year’s pilot season.
“If you want something, just ask for it. Have a little confidence in yourself. Just keep knocking on the door. there. “
