Jockey Matthew Keradi, who was replaced with five mounts last Saturday due to an ankle injury, must miss a few months of riding.
A second x-ray revealed two fractures of the right ankle in an unusual trackwork incident in The Crunge last Friday.
The raceless horse he was riding suddenly grew up and turned over, just as he was heading to the training track with five other young gallopers.
His horse, which had been working for just about two weeks, landed on his right foot. This resulted in “two fractures on the medial and lateral sides of the ankle.”
Looking back at the episode, Keladi said his mount was with two other young Schoenberts cigar-trained horses heading to the training track.
This was followed by three gallopers from trainer Stephen Clutchley’s yard.
He said all six young horses suddenly stopped and seemed creepy to the black umbrella the woman was walking across.
“The young horse stopped looking at the umbrella,” said a naturalized Singaporean.
“They were all waiting for a single woman to slowly pass through the world. One was suddenly surprised and then mine turned over with me.
“I tried to push it out, but I landed on the ground and the horse fell on my ankle. I was screaming.”
Keladi, 42, was taken to Cootech Puat Hospital and was told that she had a broken ankle on an X-ray. He was bandaged and sent home. He sought a second opinion at a private clinic on Tuesday.
“The doctor said,’I have two fractures instead of one.’ I need to see him again two weeks later and take another x-ray before he estimates the length of the healing process. There is, “said the Ipoh-born rider.
“He said he didn’t need surgery, he didn’t have to put any pins on it, he just had to wait for it to heal.
“Estimates are a couple of months. The ankles are like that. He said he couldn’t push because we ride with the ankles. This is the first healing before returning to the horse. If the bones don’t heal properly, or if they move or twist, they can crack again. “
Timeouts worry about Kellady.
“Now that I’m injured, I’m the only earner, so it affected my family’s income,” said the father of three children aged 10, 13, and 15.
He has won seven winners and 19 rankings on 82 rides this season.
