Steven Gerrard’s worst fears came true with the news that Diego Carlos tore his Achilles tendon during Saturday’s 2-1 win over Everton.
efender Carlos, who signed the club heavyweight from Sevilla in the summer, limped late at Villa Park.
“I’m very concerned about the situation,” Gerrard said at the post-match press conference.
“We are very happy with our win and our performance, but if we lose someone very important to us, the win could be ruined.
“Ankles, around the Achilles tendon. He could feel a nasty mechanism there. If you look at the players and the guys, you can see that he’s not the type to beat easily. He seems worried about that. , the medical staff seem worried too, so that’s why I’m worried.
Villa are expected to miss the majority of the season for the 29-year-old Brazil international.
A statement from the club said: “Aston Villa can confirm that Diego Carlos has torn his Achilles tendon. The player will require surgery, after which he will begin a rehabilitation programme.”
Carlos’ performance at Sevilla last season made him a popular talent, but it was Villa who announced a deal in May and won the race for his signature.
The centre-back has integrated well into the side and to lose him after just two appearances for the club would be a huge blow and could affect Villa’s plans for the rest of the transfer window.
