Reykjavík-based singer-songwriter Jelena Cilic will release her single “Roma” on August 26, 2022. But we Reykjavík Her Grapevine is a sneak peek of her gorgeous new song and another Grapevine fan Sigur Raug her great music created by Gisladottir aka Mr. Silla Her Really blessed with hashtags in videos.
“Rome” was released on Icelandic independent label Paradís Sessions and is the first track on Jelena’s upcoming EP Shelters two. This her EP follows, you guessed it, Jelena’s debut EP (you guessed it), which won Folk Her Album of the Year at the 2021 Icelandic Music Awards and was also nominated for Best Female Vocalist. Thing.
“Roma” is a sprawling ballad about fleeting relationships, but it’s also the timelessness of the human experience. “Sometimes we joke that it’s about Romulus, Remus and Tinder,” Jelena says of the track. “It asks the question: ‘What was dating like in ancient Rome?’ I do not think. ”
Like much music in 2022, ‘Shelters two’ seems to be a product of the Covid-19 pandemic that has rocked our lives so much over the past few years. I see it as part of a longer dialogue between myself and her art.
“During the pandemic, many people have had to ask themselves: Without social circles, work and art, who am I?” Jelena says. “I’ve been asking myself questions like that all my life.”
Jelena was born in Serbia and raised in Canada. Frequent country movers in his early twenties, Jelena turned to his music to navigate the shifting tides of his own identity. She is currently based in Iceland, where she is also the conductor of the choir/artistic collective Kliður (previously she was known as Kórus).
For Jelena, the pandemic delayed the release of her latest album and unexpectedly disrupted her live performance. It even made her wonder if she should continue making music. “But if you’re a musician at heart, it’s the only thing that makes sense. When you’re not doing it, you’re unhappy. There are challenges, but connecting with others through your songs It’s the ultimate reward when you can.”
Jelena believes that connection is at the heart of Shelters Two. “This is an attempt to chart the threads that connect me to the women around me, my ancestors, and my inner self,” she explains. Please understand my life as a whole. ”
