Based on figures from the wealth migration advisory group Henley & Partners, broadcaster NOS reported on Monday that about 350 million billionaires are likely to move to the Netherlands this year.
A spokeswoman told NOS that there have been moves to the Netherlands over the past year, including “a relatively large number of foreign millionaires from the UK.”
The agency publishes an annual report showing migration trends among the ultra-rich, based on an analysis of the movements of about 150,000 millionaires.
This year, Russia, China and India will lose many of their wealthiest citizens, while the UAE, Australia and Singapore will gain thousands, says Henry & Partners.
Unlike many popular countries, the Netherlands does not have a clear program to promote “investment migration”. This allows very wealthy people to get a visa or passport in exchange for an investment in a particular country.
Foreign investors can obtain a three-year residence permit in exchange for an investment of € 1.25 million in corporate or government funds. According to NOS, 20 applications were submitted and only 10 were approved between 2013 and 2019.
The MEP calls for a ban on “golden passports” and the introduction of specific European-wide rules on “golden visas” for fear of being used to promote money laundering and corruption.
According to EU statistics, between 2011 and 2019, at least 130,000 people benefited from such a system, bringing more than € 21.8 billion in revenue to the countries concerned.
