Valur Grettison, Editor-in-Chief of ReykjavÃk Grapevine, on the black sand beach Reynisfjara, the tragic news of the second death nine months later and what solutions are proposed to reduce the risk of harm in the area. We are discussing what we are doing.
When visiting Reynisfjara (or any other site in Iceland), be prepared with proper clothing and equipment and be aware of the weather, tides and surroundings. The majority of Icelandic deaths are due to not taking these factors into account. The currents around Reynisfjara are incredibly strong, and anyone of any age or swimming ability is at risk of dying if dragged into the sea. Always supervise your dog and children by following the guidance provided on the information board.
