Xining, Aug 18, 2022 (WAM) — The death toll from mountain torrent disasters caused by heavy rains in northwestern China’s Qinghai province rose to 16 as of noon on Thursday, according to the Xinhua News Agency. 36 more people are missing.

Sudden heavy rains that started at 10:25 pm on Wednesday hit Datonghui and Tu Autonomous County, causing flash floods and landslides and diverting rivers, according to the county’s public information department.

A total of 6,245 residents in six villages have been affected by the natural disaster, according to the Public Relations Department.

The state immediately launched a Level II emergency response to the disaster. This is the second highest of his four levels from I to IV.

Local authorities have dispatched more than 2,000 personnel from armed police, public security, emergency, health and other departments and more than 160 vehicles for rescue and relief operations.
