An explosion occurred at the Guzarga Mosque in the western city of Herat during Friday noon prayers. It is a highlight of Muslim religious week when places of worship are particularly crowded.

The explosion killed Mujibur Rahman Ansari, a prominent cleric. His death was confirmed by Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

Ambulances transported 18 bodies and 21 injured from the blast to a hospital in Herat, said Mohammad Daud Mohammadi, an officer at the ambulance center in Herat.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Friday’s explosion.
