They say adversity creates creativity. That maxim certainly applies to restaurants in Reykjavik. It was a slim choice when we first started summarizing the issue of Best of Reykjavik, but over the years, decision making has become less and less easy. This was really one of the most difficult dining editions we could put together, as we were content with the choice in terms of both quality and consistency. Old and new restaurants have post-pandemic energy and we are pleased to decorate their tables again. We chopped, chewed, and devoured around this wonderful city in the name of bringing you the best Reykjavik has to offer.

“Walking there makes me feel very special,” sighed one panelist. We agree, Sandholt is special of all kinds. Challenge yourself to find better laminated viennoiserie and bread that are hearty and delicious. Sandholt stands tall in a Parisian atmosphere in the Scandinavian fever, which holds onto the town’s bakery. If you’re not sure what to choose, pay attention to the custard-rich vinyl browse, or the tropical butter bread raisins of passion fruit and coconut duck words, and simple bread.

Deig continues to knock out socks at unbeatable prices, all in an American Classic play with an Icelandic twist. The donut version of Deig, Kleina, has lemon and cardamom hints in the glaze and sits on a feather-light yeast dough, perfect for a glass of Joe. Creme Brulee Donuts is another copied OG and bagels meet many desires. Unlike other bakeries, Deig’s choices are small but focused.

Brauðog Co, a city-wide chain, has finally been able to grasp QC due to the unity among the various branches. I’m trying out weekend treats in the kitchen (Danish food with mango lime coconut is still good). It’s the size of a baby’s head, but snooze is delicious. We especially like the always full cups of coffee and the compassionate details.
