They say adversity creates creativity. That maxim certainly applies to restaurants in Reykjavik. It was a slim choice when we first started summarizing the issue of Best of Reykjavik, but over the years, decision making has become less and less easy. This was really one of the most difficult dining editions we could put together, as we were content with the choice in terms of both quality and consistency. Old and new restaurants have post-pandemic energy and we are pleased to decorate their tables again. We chopped, chewed, and devoured around this wonderful city in the name of bringing you the best Reykjavik has to offer.

Ban Thai continues to dominate the roost when it comes to Thai restaurants, but I can’t help feeling that this is a potential category with a serious shake-up (we’re looking at you, Matt Bar). , That Northern Thai Pop-above). But it will have to be fierce competition, as Ban Thai does not seem to rely on its glory. Look at their websites that read like advice on prejudices you may have about cooking. Recently, I enjoy grilling smoky pork with sticky tamarind glaze.

“Iceland is not cheap. This should be an opportunity to showcase high quality food and produce,” our panelists sharply observed. However, Thai restaurants here are often plagued by the fresh punctuation of the herbs associated with cooking, perhaps as a cost-cutting measure. That said, Kurua Thai has long been a local favorite of Thai cuisine. Loyalists pledge fragrant curry, generous amounts and attentive service.

Does Maitai make curry from scratch? Probably not. Do they make the best Pad Thai in town? It is certainly so. But we want to take your attention off the noodle dish and guide you to the larb. Mai Tai is one of the few places to make chocks full of decent larbs, sliced shallots, fresh mint, coriander and toasted rice flour. I also love Tom kha kai.
