A man in his 60s was run over by a construction vehicle because a safety cable that was supposed to separate pedestrians from driving traffic was removed. The case is currently under investigation.
The man was reportedly taking a walk with his relatives at the time of his death. Relatives have already received trauma support from the Red Cross of Egilsstadir.
The port area where the accident occurred is a popular tourist destination. Here you will find artwork by Sigurður Guðmundsson. 34 oversized eggs are carved into the stone. Since 2009, when the artwork was installed, industrial activity in the port area has increased significantly.
Authorities are currently discussing moving artwork into place and considering a site safety protocol.
