Toyota continues to lead the manufacturer championship with the GR010 hybrid electric hypercar
GAZOO Racing won a dramatic double podium in 6 hours in Monza in the exciting fourth round of the 2022 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). The team’s Toyota GR010 Hybrid Electric Hypercar was a strong candidate for winning an incident-packed race at the Monza Circuit, known as the “Temple of Speed,” but won second and third place.
Sebastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa took second place just 2.762 seconds behind the final winner of the No. 8 GR010 hybrid electric hypercar. Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez took the podium in 3rd place in the No. 7 GR010 Hybrid Electric Hypercar. The valuable points earned by GAZOO Racing mean that Toyota is leading the maker championship by 15 points in the last two races.
The two GR010 Hybrid Electric Hypercars have been part of a close race from the beginning. In the opening two-thirtie full-course yellow, all hypercars stopped fueling, with Buemi in second and Lopez in third with a new strategy. A safety car was needed due to a GT rival accident, and two and a half hours after closing the field, the race’s complexion changed. All hypercars pitted in and Mike Conway was able to lead the No. 7 GR010 hybrid electric hypercar thanks to the short pit stops. The top three hypercars are only a few seconds apart in the last two hours, alternating positions at each pit stop as a result of teams changing tires at different intervals.
