Imports of non-biodegradable single-use plastic knives, forks and spoons will be completely banned from January 1 next year.

Macau has banned the import of single-use styrofoam meal boxes, bowls, cups and plates since January 1 last year, and earlier this year introduced non-biodegradable single-use plastic straws and stirrers. Import is prohibited.

The Environmental Protection Department said Macau is gradually rolling out measures to reduce the city’s plastic use as part of its environmental protection efforts.

The bureau said the new ban came after studying relevant experiences in other areas and consulting with the city’s restaurant department.
