London: King Charles III vowed to follow in the footsteps of his late mother’s many years of service to Britain and the Commonwealth, and on Friday elevated his successor, William, as the new Prince of Wales, in a moving televised address.
Charles said he shared the nation’s “immeasurable sense of loss” after his mother died Thursday at the age of 96 after a record-breaking 70-year reign.
“I renew my promise of lifelong service to all of you today,” he said. “Just as the Queen herself has made such unwavering devotion, I now solemnly pledge to uphold the constitutional principles at the heart of our nation through the rest of the time God gives me. “
The new king, along with his father, Prince Philip, who died last year, called out to his “beloved mama” and said, “I just want to say one word, thank you.”
“Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the families of the nation that you have served so diligently all this time. May the angelic flocks sing to you in peace.”
As heiress to the Queen, Charles is Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay in Scotland, a title that was soon passed to William on Thursday.
But the highest title of heir to the throne, Prince of Wales, remained a monarch’s gift to bestow or withhold.
“Today I am proud to have him born as Tywysog Cymru (in Welsh), Prince of Wales. I’ve been honored,” said Charles.

“Today I speak to you with great sadness. Throughout my life, Her Majesty the Queen – my beloved mother – has been an inspiration and example to me and my entire family. Her love , for love, guidance, understanding, and example.
