Today (Thursday), the Legislative Assembly (AL) has approved the first draft amendment to the Tobacco Control and Control Act, which bans the manufacture, distribution, sale, import, export, and transport of e-cigarettes inside and outside the SAR.
The law provides a fine of MOP 4,000 (US $ 494) for violations and may result in fines of MOP 20,000 to MOP 200,000 for entities.
During the debate, AL’s agents argued that the government should go further and ban the consumption of e-cigarettes.
Others have advocated increased awareness of smoking cessation and expressed concern about the risks that the new law could increase e-cigarette smuggling.
Legislative changes will be further discussed at the Standing Committee level.
