Dutch winger Lieke Martens is out of € 2022 due to a leg injury that ended his participation prematurely.

The 29-year-old, who signed with Paris Saint-Germain earlier this summer, suffered a problem during a Group C 4-1 victory over Switzerland on Sunday.

A statement on the official Dutch website states: “Lieke Martens suffered a leg injury during the match against Switzerland. Her investigation revealed that she was unable to take her action at this European Championship.

“Martens will leave the training camp on Tuesday night. No alternatives can be called.”

The news has hit the head coach of Mark Parsons in a new way. Mark Parsons’ plans have been repeatedly interrupted by Covid-19 and injuries.

Star striker Fifiane Midema hasn’t played after showing a positive in the opening round of the match. Midfielder Jackie Groenen did not beat Portugal 3-2 as he quarantined himself and defender Anique Nawen played in the match with an ankle injury.

Parsons, who lost goalkeeper and skipper Sari van Veenendard in the tournament due to shoulder problems, said: She was fully committed to her team during this tournament.

“It’s a shame that her European Championship has to end this way.”

The Netherlands will face France in the quarterfinals at Rotherham’s New York Stadium on Saturday night.
