Life expectancy, an important indicator of the health level of a country’s inhabitants, reached 78.2 years in China in 2021, according to statistics released by the National Health Commission (NHC) on Tuesday. This figure is 77 in 2020, an increase from 1993.
Maternal mortality in China fell in 2021 from 16.9 per 100,000 in 2020 to 16.1 per 100,000, the Commission said in its annual report on national health development.
According to the Commission, infant mortality in China dropped from 5.4 per 1,000 in 2020 to 5 per 1,000 last year.
Song Li, head of maternal and child health at NHC, said mortality rates for pregnant women, infants and children under the age of five in China all fell to record lows in 2021.
