Five animal welfare groups have called on Agriculture Minister Henk Staghauer to put an end to fairs where exotic animals are traded.
According to World Animal Protection, International Fund for Animal Welfare (Ifaw), Stichting Spots, Stichting Aap and Dierencoalitie, trade fairs jeopardize animal welfare and pose risks to public health.
Following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, believed to have originated in an animal market in Wuhan, China, scientists believe that exotic animals, especially when crammed into one space, could spread the disease. I warn you that there is.
They warned that no laws have been enacted to ban the trade in animals such as lizards, pythons, crocodiles and ara, and that it takes place at “dozens of fairs” each year.
Sanne Kuijpers of World Animal Protection told Trouw:
According to her, the animals are constantly being lifted and moved, and their mouths are taped to prevent them from biting.
Former agriculture minister Carola Schouten said a preliminary study on trade fairs and potential risks, which began last November, needs to be accelerated, the organization said.
