NATO and the US have hinted at being more active in the Arctic given Russia’s increased military activity in the region.
“NATO must increase its presence in the Arctic,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told German newspaper Welt am Sonntag.
He added that Russia was in the process of reopening its Soviet-era military bases in its Arctic region and deploying new modern weapons there, including hypersonic missiles.
China is also showing growing interest in the region, Stoltenberg said.
On Friday, the US State Department announced the appointment of its first-ever special ambassador for the Arctic.
The plan, which requires Senate approval, is intended to advance “American interests and cooperation with allies and partners in the Arctic,” according to a Washington statement.
The Arctic Circle includes areas belonging to Russia, USA, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
