The majority of Swedes believe Sweden will become a NATO member, but the percentage has declined slightly in the last two weeks, new polls show.
Eighty-three percent believe Sweden will become a NATO member, down from 89% in a similar survey two weeks ago, the Swedish broadcaster SVT reports.
The survey was conducted by Novus and also shows that Sweden has a stable percentage of people who think it’s good to submit a membership application at 60%.
“I think Sweden will be a member of NATO, but I think it depends a lot on how ready Turkey is for American fighters and domestic political interests,” said an associate professor at the Swedish National Defense University. Says Magnus Christianson. Said.
He pointed out that Turkey’s opposition to Sweden’s accession led to a process that took longer than the Swedes thought. He still believes that the disagreement between Sweden and Turkey can be resolved by the NATO conference in Madrid later this month.
“If that doesn’t happen, I think the next opportunity will be after the summer and Swedish elections,” Christianson said.
