The contract with the supplier of the military’s maritime NH90 helicopter is to be terminated, and the Norwegian government is demanding 5 billion Norwegian krone from the supplier.
Defense Minister Bjorn Alald Gram (SP) announced at a press conference on Friday morning that the helicopter will be shut down immediately.
“We have now conducted a thorough assessment of whether NH90 can achieve real operational benefits by implementing further measures from the defense sector. The conclusion was negative.” Said the Defense Minister.
The Norwegian Defense Materials Agency has sent a declaration of cancellation to NHI. Mr Gram said the helicopter was returned and Norwegian authorities demanded that the $ 5 billion previously paid to the helicopter be returned.

Defense equipment highlights four reasons for the termination of the contract and, more importantly, emphasizes delays and time-consuming maintenance.
In 2001, the Pentagon decided to purchase 14 NH90 helicopters from the Nato Helicopter Industries (NHI) Consortium. The helicopter was to be used by the Coast Guard and Nansen-class Norwegian frigates.
The machine was scheduled to be delivered from 2005 to 2008, but delivery was significantly delayed. In 2018, the army received only 8 out of 14 people, 6 of whom could only be used for training. At the beginning of 2022, one of the 14 had not yet been delivered.
Due to the increased need for unexpected maintenance, flight times have been significantly reduced. The military pointed out that the operational capabilities of the Coast Guard were weakened as a result.
It was decided that the helicopter would be phased out and the contract would be terminated.
