War is raging in Ukraine and the level of Russian military activity in the north is very high. At the same time, the Norwegian intelligence ship Margiata is anchored at Horten.
According to the online newspaper Aldrimer.no, the ship has been on Horten for more than two weeks. The ship is one of the Norwegian military’s most important tools for gathering intelligence and monitoring Russian military activity in the northern regions.
August is the peak season for Russia’s Northern Fleet activity in the Barents Sea and North Atlantic, says an online newspaper.
The Norwegian Armed Forces has confirmed that Margiata is now in the Oslo Fjord and not in the Barents Sea.
“The ship is in Horten for scheduled scheduled maintenance,” Alexander Engborg Hage wrote in an email to Aldrimer.no.
Ann-Kristin Bjergene, communications manager for the Norwegian Intelligence Agency, said he would not comment on details about the vessel or its sailing patterns.
Marjata’s absence has weakened Norway’s intelligence capacity and increased the Allied presence in the north, the online newspaper notes.
