The opposition Labor Party (PvdA) and GroenLinks have formed an alliance to fight next year’s local elections on a joint list of candidates.
Members of both parties voted with an overwhelming margin at separate weekend meetings to pool their resources in next year’s elections. And it also determines the composition of the next Senate. The plan was supported by more than 75% of Labor Party members and 80% of GroenLinks ranks and files.
Labor Party Prime Minister Attje Kuiken said:
Jesse Klaver, leader of GroenLinks, said: This is great news for the Netherlands. “
PvdA and GroenLinks currently occupy 17 seats in the House of Representatives and 14 of the 100 Senators.
The deal falls short of the merger advocated by some within the party, but will bring the two closer together after agreeing to cooperate in 15 key policy areas in January.
Voting decline
GroenLinks has reduced 6 of its 14 seats in the last general election, while PvdA has shrunk from a party that regularly won more than 35 seats in parliament to just 9 in the last two elections over the last 20 years. I lost it.
A weekend poll by Maurice de Hondo showed that each party would each win 12 seats in the general election.
Most senior party figures supported the idea of a joint list, but PvdA in particular disagreed. Former leader Ad Melkelt said working with GroenLinks in the Senate “does not provide a single additional vote.” “We need to get those votes from elsewhere and we need to do that as PvdA.”
