Milano Design Week is one of the most important design events in the world, and its highlight is the Salone Dell Mobile Furniture Fair.
Shua’a Ali and Maryam Al Suwaidi introduced Qatar’s cultural identity through the “Shurouq” furniture collection that appeared at Milano Design Week.
Talking to Doha News, the two talents said the collection is the culmination of a co-design process and contains seven products.
Inspired by the history of Qatar’s nature and culture, contemporary furniture that emphasizes uniqueness and versatility was created by Qatar designers in collaboration with FROMM.
The work is visually appealing in terms of aesthetics and brings an international angle to Qatar’s heritage. They can be used in a variety of settings, from personal home use to professional hospitality settings such as businesses and airports.
Behind the piece
Designers note that there was a lot of inspiration behind the various works on display.
Shua’a Ali has created a coffee table “Maiz”, a side table “Tawla”, a console “Derj”, a wall unit “Maktaba” and a floor lamp “Laite”. Co-designed with Ellaquadro. The strong presence of the arch, inspired by the design of traditional Qatari architecture, makes these works stand out.
The unique perforated design of the items in this collection is inspired by the dove towers found throughout Qatar and the Gulf region. The old and new are metaphors of traditional and cultural language-speaking dialogues as inspiration for maintaining cultural identity in the face of fast-paced globalization.
Maryam Al Suwaidi was inspired by the natural components of the dunes and their dynamic structure in the conceptualization and development of the sofa “Bida”, the armchairs and poufs “Haima”, and the table “Majra”.
