The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and Microsoft announced on Wednesday that Qatar’s first hyper-scale cloud data center region has been launched.
Over the next five years, it is expected to bring about $18.7 billion in additional revenue to the Qatari economy and create 36,000 new jobs in the region.
The Microsoft cloud datacenter region will allow Qatar to step into the world’s largest cloud infrastructure footprint, reinforcing the country’s role as a leader in the digital space while significantly enhancing its competitiveness on a global and regional scale.
The announcement was made during an event called “Qatar’s Digital Journey to the Future”. The event was attended by ministers, senior private sector executives, and Microsoft global and regional executives.
The Microsoft cloud data center region in Qatar will have an exponential impact on regional economic growth, supporting the Gulf’s efforts to diversify its economy, develop its workforce, and attract foreign investment.
“These pioneering projects in the fields of digital transformation, telecommunications and information technology are without a vision for this important sector that believes in the ambition of the country’s enlightened leadership and its vital role in the development of other economic sectors. We will strengthen the legislative and legal regulation of the sector to make it more attractive,” said Minister Mohammed bin Ali Al Mannai.

Apart from this, about 11 global partners and ISVs have started operations in Qatar in 2021 alone. Research shows that for every dollar of revenue Microsoft cloud generates, the partner ecosystem is expected to generate $7.87 by 2026, up from $6.41 by 2023.
