Doha: Qatar hopes to accommodate some of the 1.2 million fans who will be competing in the FIFA World Cup later this year in a 1,000 “traditional tent,” the organizers said Tuesday. “This is one of the options that will be available in the next two weeks,” said Omar Al-Jaber, head of accommodation for the tournament’s Supreme Commission. “It’s a real camp,” he said at a press conference. “We need to provide people with a normal Bedouin-style desert and tent experience.” Tent is supplied with water, electricity and drainage systems, but in countries known for the heat of summer there is no air conditioning. The World Cup, which runs from November 21st to December 18th, is first held in the northern winters to prevent summer temperatures from exceeding 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit). Another luxury camp with 200 tents is planned for football fans visiting gas-rich Gulf countries. It will be set up along a beach called Sealine, south of the country on the edge of the desert, and other areas will be announced, Jaber said.

He adds that “more than 100,000 rooms” will be available at the time of the tournament and is trying to ease concerns about the capacity of the small emirates. Fans can choose to live in a specially designated village or in an apartment, villa, cabin or two cruise ships. Most of the country’s hotel rooms have already been pre-booked by teams, referees and media organizers, but FIFA will release unused rooms, Jaber said.

He vowed that there are more hotels under construction and more rooms will be available in the coming months. A peak booking is expected from November 25th to 27th, which coincides with the midpoint of the group stage, but “it doesn’t mean there are no rooms on that day,” he said. More than 160 round-trip flights are scheduled daily from neighboring Gulf countries to accommodate supporters.
