The 33-year-old former competitive swimmer shared a lengthy post on Instagram explaining how she discovered she had lost her pregnancy during a 12-week scan on Tuesday.

Adlington said he was discharged from hospital on Thursday but was readmitted on Friday to be treated for sepsis, kidney infection and fever.

She is currently “recovering slowly” but it has been a “devastating time” for her and her husband.

Adlington, who shared a photo from the hospital over tea, wrote: I managed to be discharged on Thursday and readmitted on Friday.

“After spending a day treating sepsis, a kidney infection and a fever, I am slowly recovering. It’s been a long road, but I’m in the right place.

“I can’t thank the hospitals and staff enough for their support. It’s a very devastating time, but it’s important that we’re not alone and that there are many who support us. I remember one thing.
