A senior Dutch tennis coach has arrested two professional male players on suspicion of sexual assault.

No coach has been nominated, but NOS said he was a former player who was previously ranked in the top 100 in the world. The suspect filed a formal police complaint.

He was involved in coaching promising professional amateur players at all levels, from young to old, until the police were involved a month ago, NOS quoted from his club.

A spokesman for the prosecution said the coach was released by a justice of the peace under harsh conditions, including a ban on contact, while the criminal investigation continued.

Two male lawyers, Annemiek van Spanje, said they had not decided to go lightly to the police, given the potential public interest.

“Still, they believed they had to do it to prevent other young tennis players from being victims of sexual abuse,” she said.

Jacco Eltingh, a former tennis professional and technical director at the Dutch Lawn Tennis Association KNLTB, said he had spoken to several other coaches about the situation.

“It was important to tell directly what was happening,” he said. “Some details on this issue are known in the tennis world, which led to rumors.”
