A Dutch soldier is critically ill in an Iraqi hospital after being shot in the chest while servicing weapons.
The Marechaussee is investigating what happened at the Erbil air base in northern Iraq, where about a dozen Dutch personnel are stationed.
The man was part of the 11th Air Raid Brigade, part of the Dutch forces guarding the base.
The Ministry of Defense said he was in critical condition and that his family had been notified, but did not provide further details.
Army chief Onno Eichelsheim said his thoughts were with the soldiers, his family and colleagues. “I’m monitoring the situation closely,” he told the NOS.
