Tiger Woods withdrew from the US Open on Tuesday, saying his injured right leg needed more time to get stronger to fight in the majors.
Woods returned to the Masters with a surprise just 14 months after he broke his right leg and ankle in a car accident in February 2021 in the suburbs of Los Angeles. He made a cut at Augusta National and played the PGA Championship at Southern Hills.
He made another cut, but Woods stumbled badly on Saturday and withdrew after his first major withdrawal on the weekend after the third round.
Woods posted on social media on Tuesday that “it takes more time to get stronger in golf at the major championships.”
He said he hopes to be ready to play at the Charity Pro-Am event in Ireland prior to the British Open in St Andrews. In St Andrews, he won two of the three Claret Jugs.
Woods is the sixth time in the last 12 years. The US Open has won three times. Most recently, in 2008, Torrey Pines had a double stress fracture in his left leg, and his knee ligaments were shredded. Reconstructive surgery when the event is over.
He finally played in Winged Foot in 2020 and missed the cut.
Prior to the previous two majors, Woods made a noise on the internet, and a private plane tracking site showed that he was in Augusta National and Southern Hills a week or so early for a scout trip and thought he would play. It was a clear sign that I was there.
There was no plane to Boston this time. Woods made his last appearance at the Brookline Country Club in 1999 and won a singles match against Andrew Coltart as part of a great American rally to win the Ryder Cup.
“I’m disappointed that I can’t see him in Boston, but personally, I’m happy that he’s in good health,” said Mike One, CEO of the USGA. 2022. I want to see Tiger in the long run, not just the US Open. “
Woods was always looking at St Andrews, even after playing for the Masters. He said after the Masters he didn’t know if he could play at the PGA Championship or the US Open, but he would play at the British Open.
The old course is relatively flat and is the easiest of the four majors to walk.
