The Meteorological and Geophysical Administration (SMG) announced that it will display signal No.3 at 2pm as Typhoon Mahon is approaching the west coast of Guangdong province “rapidly”.

The agency said it is highly likely that Signal 8 will go into effect between tonight and tomorrow morning, and less likely that Signal 9 will go into effect.

Local weather is expected to become erratic starting this afternoon, and winds in Macau will strengthen tonight with strong gusts, frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

Typhoon Mahon is currently about 490 kilometers southeast of Macau, moving west of the Pearl River Estuary, and the tropical storm will be closest this evening and tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, the station issued a yellow storm surge warning at 11 am this morning. Flooding is expected in low-lying areas tomorrow from 4am to noon due to expected storm surges and continued rainfall.
