Ukrainian firefighters, known for rescuing people from shelled buildings in more than six months of civil war, turned their attention to a furry victim, a gray-and-white kitten, last weekend.
Rescuers battled ferocious flames and smoke to pull a kitten out of the rubble of a large wooden hotel and restaurant complex in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, from under a metal chair in the rubble. I dragged the kitten out.
The video showed firefighters petting and cuddling the kitten as they carried it to safety.
“We found something beautiful,” said one of the firefighters.
The Ukrainian emergency service said the kitten’s paw needs treatment.
“A hero of our time,” the ambulance service declared the firefighter.
“They protect, work, save, treat…and we wish the cat a speedy recovery.”
