The government is being called upon to step up vaccination campaigns against monkeypox to target everyone at risk of getting sick from sexual contact.
The latest figures show that there have been 503 confirmed cases of monkeypox in the Netherlands since the end of April. The 101 increase last week is the largest since the outbreak began, but in some cases it is not confirmed until a few weeks after infection.
The pilot vaccination program will begin in Amsterdam in the coming weeks for a group of 2,000 people who have been prescribed PrEP, a treatment for the HIV virus. So far, monkeypox is prevalent mainly among men who have sex with other men.
If the plan is successful, the Imvanex vaccine, which is based on the smallpox vaccine, will be deployed to 32,000 people nationwide who are HIV-positive or at high risk of developing sexually transmitted diseases, Health Minister Ernst Kuipers told Congress last week.
Richard Keldouis, a spokesman for the PrEP patient group PrEPnu, said: Have different sexual relationships. “
Soa Aids Nederland said the vaccine target group needs to be expanded to “all men who have sex with men and transgender people with different sexual contacts.” The Ministry of Health also needs to consider purchasing additional vaccine doses, the organization said.
The Ministry of Health said there is sufficient vaccine inventory at this time, even if the risk group grows larger. “We want to target people at high risk of vaccines as directly as possible,” a spokesman said.
“You may need to expand this group at a later stage. At that point, seek expert advice.”
