President Volodymyr Zelensky’s senior aide on Sunday posted a picture of a soldier holding a Ukrainian flag over a village he labeled as being in the southern region that Kyiv is targeting in a new counteroffensive.
“Vysokopyla. Kherson region. Ukraine. Today,” Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Office Kirilo Tymoshenko wrote in a Facebook post over a photo of three soldiers standing on the roof.
Occupying the village would represent a tangible acquisition of territory in a counterattack launched last week and targeting the southern part of the country.
The main focus of the new military effort is the Kherson region, seized by Russian forces early in the current conflict.
Kherson lies just north of Crimea, which Moscow invaded and annexed in February and March 2014.
